Rosso / Circuit patterns

Pattern catalogue

An effects pedal isa handful of patterns, combined.

Fuzz, chorus, compressor - unpick any of them and the same handful of building blocks keep turning up. The buffer that only hands a voltage on, the clipper that flattens the peaks, the BBD that shifts things in time. This page is a catalogue of those patterns, sorted by what they do. Every figure has knobs on it, and the waveform, transfer curve and frequency response follow as you move them.

The schematics are stripped down to the idea. For the values you would actually build with, open the matching preset.

How to read what follows

01

Pick one and run the knob to the end

The extremes tell you far more than the middle. Max out the drive; drop the cutoff to the bottom. Nothing here can break, so go ahead.

02

Read the waveform and the harmonics together

Change the shape of the wave and the harmonics move with it. Squash it symmetrically and only odd harmonics appear; squash it lopsidedly and the even ones stand up - that is what "fat" and "gritty" actually are.

03

Open the same circuit in Rosso

Each card names the preset or the parts that match it. Open it in Rosso and you get the circuit with real values in it, ready to modify.

What to do next

Once you know the patterns,
the rest is arranging them.

Rosso is a simulator that plays your schematic as you draw it. Lay out the patterns you saw here and hear what a single part changes. Windows / macOS, free.
